The Bible isn’t just a book to read; it is a living message to explore. Through our engagement with the Bible, we learn about the parables, characters, and, most importantly, the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We become familiar with Scripture and hear from God in a much broader sense. However, when it comes to studying the Bible with purpose, it can transform not only your understanding but also your entire relationship with God.
Studying the Bible is like opening a direct line to God’s heart. When we are studying a verse or chapter, we gain a deeper comprehension of Scripture. The more we study scripture, the greater our understanding of God’s love and purpose becomes, enabling us to live out and apply His word in our daily walk with Him.
If you are new to reading the Bible, I pray that these Bible study tips will help you gain a deeper understanding of Scripture and foster spiritual growth in your walk with God.
Purchasing a Bible
First of all, if you do not own a physical Bible, I encourage you to get one! Reading and studying with a physical Bible will enable you to create more focused and uninterrupted time with God. Yes, it is helpful to have the Bible app, but reading on your phone may lead to distractions. You certainly do not want to go from reading a Psalm to scrolling on TikTok on your phone.
When you read a physical Bible, you are not battling with notifications, apps, or the temptation to scroll. Instead, you engage in sacred time with the Lord, immersing yourself in the truth of His Word. A physical Bible also provides a valuable space for taking notes and highlighting verses, allowing you to make personal connections. After all, our physical Bible serves as a personal record of our walk with God, enabling us to demonstrate to others how to apply His Word in our lives.
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” – 2 Timothy 3:16-17
When purchasing a Bible, you may want to consider which translation to buy. Personally, I recommend getting a King James Version (KJV) because it has been used in many classic hymns, sermons, and theological writings. Reading and studying the KJV can deepen your understanding and gives you a challenge when studying scripture. If you are looking for a KJV Bible at a cheaper price, Amazon offers some for as low as $13.66. DaySpring is another option if you wish to purchase a Bible for note-taking.

Set a Time and Place
Consistency is key when it comes to reading the Bible. Reading the Bible every day is important as it strengthens our relationship with God and helps us grow spiritually. Not only should you prioritize daily Bible reading, but you should also consider the best times to do so. I recommend two optimal times for reading the Bible.
1) First thing in the morning after you wake up.
Reading God’s word first thing in the morning sets the tone for your entire day, spiritually, mentally, and emotionally equipping you for what lies ahead. It allows you to start your day with peace, purpose, and clarity, free from stress and distractions. By choosing to hear God’s voice first, you prioritize spiritual nourishment over phone notifications.
“My voice: shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up” – Psalm 5:3 (KJV)
2) Before you go to bed
After a full day of work, stress, and distractions, God’s word helps you reset your mind and heart. It can clear away any negative and anxious thoughts while replacing them with truth and hope. His word calms your spirit and helps you release any burdens before you go to sleep. Avoid going to bed anxious; instead, be anchored in the promises that God has for you.
“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety” – Psalm 4:8 (KJV)
Now that you know the best times to read your Bible, it’s important to consider the best places to do so. One crucial tip I want to emphasize is to avoid reading your Bible in bed. While your bed may be comfortable, it is primarily designed for sleeping, not for reading. You may become too relaxed and end up falling asleep if you read your Bible in bed. Here are some of the best places in your home to read your Bible.
1) Outside on your front porch/backyard
The fresh air, the chirping of birds, and the bright sunlight create an intimate and calming space for your time alone with God. Also, did you know that spending time outside can improve your mood? Studies have consistently shown that being outdoors can reduce anxiety, enhance cognitive function, and increase focus. You experience a profound sense of peace when you are in God’s presence, whether you are reading your Bible or praying.
2) Living Room
If you live in a quiet household, then reading your Bible in your living room is another option. It’s a spacious room in your house and it sets a cozy and calm mood for reading God’s word. If you want a more bible-reading friendly experience, I suggest creating a designated spot for your daily Bible readings like a favorite chair or a corner with a small table for your Bible, journal, and pen. You want to have a peaceful atmosphere when spending time in God’s word.
book Recommendations
When you are learning to study the Bible with intention, starting with the right book can significantly impact your experience. Some books are easier to understand, more applicable to everyday life, and provide a clearer picture of God’s character and His plan for us. Here are a few great books to consider to start reading in the Bible, especially if you seek to grow in both knowledge and spiritual depth:
1) Gospel of John
Out of the four gospels in the New Testament, this is one that I typically recommend to a new Christian. This was the first book of the Bible that I was presented with before I got saved, as it presents who Jesus is and why He matters. God showed His love for us by sending His son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for ALL of our sins. When we believe that Jesus paid the penalty for all of our sins, we will have eternal life in heaven.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” – John 3:16 (KJV)
The themes in this book serve as an excellent introduction for new Christians, covering essential concepts such as abiding in Jesus Christ and being born again. This book is the ideal starting point for anyone new to reading the Bible and seeking to learn about Jesus.
2) Genesis
If you prefer to start reading Old Testament first, then you definitely have to read the first book in the Bible. Genesis explains the beginning of everything from God’s creation to sin to His promises. This book lays the essential foundation for understanding the rest of the Bible. Genesis gives key concepts that are repeated in scripture such as faith, sacrifice, obedience, grace, and God’s faithfulness
“In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth” – Genesis 1:1 (KJV)
3) Romans
If you want to gain a deeper understanding of the essence of faith, the book of Romans is an excellent place to begin reading. Romans clearly lays out the Gospel of Jesus Christ, explaining our need for salvation, what Jesus has done for us, and how we can be saved by grace through faith. It also systematically unpacks spiritual truths, addressing concepts such as sin, justification, grace, faith, and righteousness in a step-by-step manner.
“But God commendeth his love towards us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him” – Romans 5:8-9 (KJV)
The Book of Romans not only reveals the concept of salvation but also provides guidance on how to live as a Christian. When we become followers of Jesus Christ, our minds are renewed. We are no longer living through the secular world as we are transformed as children of God.
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” – Romans 12:2 (KJV)
4) Ephesians
The Book of Ephesians serves as a powerful introduction for new believers, as it is filled with essential truths about your identity in Christ and how to live as a follower of Jesus. The first half of this New Testament book explains your identity in Christ, emphasizing that you are chosen, redeemed, and sealed with the Holy Spirit. It also reveals the free gift of salvation from God, highlighting that we are saved by grace through faith, not by our works.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” – Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV)
The second half of Ephesians presents a vision for unity within the church. Paul describes the church as the body of Christ and emphasizes that it serves as our dwelling place for fellowship with other believers while worshiping God. The second half also explains how we should live and act as Christians, addressing concepts such as communication, forgiveness, marriage, and spiritual strength. All of these qualities emerge when we put off the old person that we once were and become a new person in Christ
“And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness” – Ephesians 4:24 (KJV)
Pick A Study Method
You have a purpose to studying the Bible as you are longing to know God’s word and how to apply it into your walk with God. This desire for deeper understanding reflects a sincere commitment to nurturing your faith and strengthening your relationship with the Divine. It is essential to use a good study method that not only aids in comprehending the text but also encourages thoughtful reflection and application in everyday life. If you are struggling to study the Bible or if you are new to reading it, then I recommend these two study methods.
1)S.O.A.P Method
The S.O.A.P. method stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. This well-known approach encourages you to slow down, reflect deeply, and personally connect with God. Begin by selecting scripture or a verse from the Bible that the Holy Spirit is revealing to you, and write it down in a journal or on a piece of paper.
Example: “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” – Philippians 4:13
After you write down the verse, reread it and reflect on its meaning. What is happening in the context of that verse? What insights is God revealing to you as you read His Word? Write down any observations you make after examining the details.
Then, take a moment to reflect on that verse. This is the part where it becomes personal. How does this verse apply to your life right now? Is it convicting you about something? Is it giving you direction? Be honest and write down how you will live out the truth you have uncovered.
Finally, write a short prayer to the Lord about what you have learned. Ask God to help you apply that verse into your daily walk with Him, and thank Him for revealing His Word. As you pray, also ask that God will share the insights He has given you with others in your life, so that your loved ones may experience a renewed mind and a softened heart through the truth of God’s Word.
2) Verse by Verse
This is a study method that I personally use whenever I read a chapter in the Bible. Studying verse by verse allows you to concentrate on the details and context of the chapter. It also helps you understand the events occurring within the chapter itself. This method is particularly beneficial when reading books from the Old Testament, as it enhances your comprehension of the characters and reveals underlying themes.

If you plan to use this study method, I recommend downloading the Blue Letter Bible app, as it includes commentaries that offer in-depth explanations and interpretations of scripture.
Commentaries from David Guzik, Matthew Henry, and other scholars can provide valuable context, clarity, and deeper insights that you might miss when reading scripture.
Commentaries can help you remain doctrinally sound when you encounter challenging passages and can help guard you from misunderstandings or any twisting scripture.
Once again, I HIGHLY recommend writing down in a journal about what God reveals to you in each verse or chapter. Write a brief summary of how you can apply what you have just read to your walk with God. If you are reading a book from the Old Testament, summarize the events of the chapter or reflect on how you can relate to any of the characters in the Bible. This is an excellent way to connect with God’s Word and to build a deeper relationship with the Lord Himself.
Stay Consistent and Be Patient
Consistency is essential when reading and studying God’s Word. Regular engagement with Scripture can transform your heart, renew your mind, and anchor your life in truth. As you become more consistent, you will gain spiritual growth. Remember, spiritual growth takes time; a seed does not become a beautiful, tall plant overnight. It needs daily sunlight and water to grow. Our spirit needs daily nourishment from Scripture to grow in our walk with God.
Having a daily habit of reading the Bible can help you stay grounded, especially during busy or uncertain seasons of your life. Even in a season of uncertainty, you will hear God’s voice as you engage in your daily Bible reading. Therefore, be consistent in reading and studying the Bible, and recognize God’s guidance and discernment in your life.
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” – Hebrews 4:12 (KJV)
Conclusion
Studying the Bible with purpose isn’t just about gaining knowledge—it’s about growing closer to the heart of God. Whether you are just starting out or seeking to go deeper, keep this in mind: God desires to meet you in His Word. Every page contains truth, encouragement, correction, and life.
So don’t wait for the perfect moment—start today! Choose a book from the Bible, grab a notebook, and invite the Holy Spirit to guide your study. Utilize a helpful study method, pray as you read, and allow Scripture to shape your identity. You are a child of God. Let His Word reveal truths to you and apply them to your walk with Him.
